The Legitimate Digital Product Passport uses our unique LGT Protocol to back products on-chain.
The LGT Protocol is an on-chain framework designed to keep physical assets in-sync with their digital counterparts, specifically from an ownership and provenance perspective. When integrated into the LGT Protocol, a product is capable of becoming a phygital (physical + digital) product.
LGT Tags and the Legitimate platform can be by used by customers to verify the authenticity and ownership of physical goods through Legitimate's services and the LGT Protocol smart contracts on-chain.
Our product data including product information, individual creation date, and anonymized owner identifiers are stored on blockchains so it can be independently accessed and verified for authenticity and circularity tracking.
Phygital products powered by Legitimate's LGT Protocol has a few key features:
Locking Mechanism on the Digital ID NFT
An NFT is “locked” and cannot be used or transferred until the physical product is scanned by the current owner to unlock.
Secure
When an owner of a phygital product transfers the NFT to another person, the NFT is immediately locked again (thanks to the Locking Mechanism). The only way to unlock the NFT is by scanning the NFC tag attached to the product.
Extensible
Third party exchanges, marketplaces, and dApps can build on top of this “locked” NFT state to provide token gated content, access, and more.
To make it as easy as possible to tap into phygital products, Legitimate offers turn-key integration options that help brands and creators get started immediately.
Legitimate's end-to-end service offerings include:
LGT Tags
Pre-programmed and quality checked
LGT Tag Platform that connects the LGT Tags to the blockchain and other content
Mobile and Desktop Tag Programmers to securely program the individual tags with unique private keys and associate them to a batch or SKU
Tag Verification Services to verify the single use digital signatures generated upon each tap of the LGT Tag for authenticity and enable access to exclusive content
API Access for creating custom unique digital experiences tailored for your product
LGT Tap for end users interact with the digital content and the LGT Tag directly
LGT Dashboard for managing tags, viewing usage analytics, and editing content
Blank tags programmable with our
Along with , Legitimate's service offerings are the easiest way for any brand to start creating phygital products and experiences.
For creators and brands using Legitimate's services, we require a set of assets to be provided ahead of minting the NFTs in preparation for testing, distribution, and sale.
These materials must be submitted at least a week before testing and two weeks before distribution and sale.

Description
Digital content (optional)
Text, images, videos, and content embeds (can be provided in a shared document on Google Drive or in a document file such as Word, Powerpoint, or PDF)
Desired blockchain (choose between Avalanche, Polygon, or Ethereum*)
Transaction fees are covered for Avalanche and Polygon for mint, configuration, and claims
A deposit in ETH is required for Ethereum to cover all transaction fees for minting and claiming. Deposit will be calculated based on gas unit price at 100 gwei in case of spikes in network activity. The deposit must be received before the contract is deployed and the NFT is minted.
The LGT Digital Experience is the user interface that powers a full end-to-end customer journey when interacting with the NFT, special content, and digital activation. It comprises of a few different steps from the initial preview screen to the final exclusive content page.
The user will see an introduction screen with details about the NFT and digital experience when the site loads. This screen is meant to provide the user with enough information and instructions so they feel comfortable connecting their wallet or inputting their email to log in.
The title, body text, and image can be customized for each group of tags.
We offer over 100+ ways to connect wallets via our provider dynamic.xyz including MetaMask, WalletConnect, Ledger, and many others. Depending on the blockchain of the associated NFT, we also suggest wallets that are more user friendly and suitable for that ecosystem, i.e. Core Wallet by Ava Labs for Avalanche and Rainbow for Ethereum and Trust Wallet for Polygon.
We also offer the option to create a wallet with email or phone number through our provider Particle Network. Custom wallets and other email providers such as Magic can be used as well.
We offer an integration with MailChimp as a service add-on so that emails can be captured with consent for marketing purposes during the login process. This email list can then be used directly for email newsletters about the product or exported to your existing provider such as Klaviyo, Constant Contact, and others.
Legitimate does not store any user data on our own servers and relies solely on trusted external providers such as Magic, Dynamic, and MailChimp for authentication services and email storage. We comply with all major privacy regulations including GDPR (Europe), CCPA (California), VCDPA (Virginia), and LDPR (Brazil).
After the login process is finished and a wallet is connected, Legitimate's services will then transfer an NFT to the connected wallet. This process takes about 3-5s on blockchains with quick time-to-finality such as Avalanche and 15-30s on slower chains such as Ethereum and Polygon.
This transfer is gasless for the end user because the transaction fee is paid for as part of the Legitimate service offering for most networks. For Ethereum, a deposit of ETH for gas usage is required.
The default digital experience includes a rendering of the NFT, title, description, and the associated blockchain information such as owner, network, contract address, and token ID.
Additional content can be added using Builder.io below the NFT information as an addon service.
For clients that need advanced customizations outside of the usual capabilities of Builder.io, a custom experience can be built from scratch in JavaScript and added via our Custom Experience addon.

Our system tracks ownership and activation state of phygital items through the blockchain. All users, whether using email, SMS, or crypto wallets, have a unique public wallet address. This address is not publicly associated with the owner, but can be configured through various third party platforms to assign usernames, avatars, and social media accounts that may reveal a person's identity.
When a user connects their own crypto wallet to Legitimate's services, they will most likely use a system called WalletConnect that allows mobile, web, and other wallets to connect to dApps.
We utilize a separate service called Dynamic to manage third party wallet connections including WalletConnect.
Legitimate does not store any data about with end user wallets and wallet interactions.
When a user uses email or SMS to login to Legitimate, they use our service provider Dynamic to create an email or SMS based wallet. This email or phone number and wallet is stored with Dynamic.
Legitimate does not have access to the email unless that permission is granted by the user when requested with Dynamic. Legitimate does not store any email address or wallets associated with emails.
This is a custom service add-on available for our enterprise clients that require customized login flows and data requirements. The email, phone number, and wallet is stored with Magic.
Legitimate does not store email addresses, phone numbers, or wallets.
However, Legitimate will sometimes fetch email, phone number, and wallet information from Magic for specific product features such as ownership history and processes this data on our servers. Historical data is always anonymized and is not saved on our servers.
Since all of Legitimate's products run on public blockchains such as Avalanche, Ethereum, and Polygon, all ownership, mint, and transfer history is publicly viewable on Snowtrace, Etherscan, PolygonScan, and many other blockchain or NFT platforms.
We utilize many third parties to process public blockchain data on behalf of Legitimate including Ava Labs, Ankr, SimpleHash, and others.
Legitimate does not store any blockchain data.
For enterprise clients that require email marketing integrations with their phygital products, we utilize MailChimp to manage mailing lists, subscriptions, and unsubscribe requests.
Enterprise clients may request this mailing list from Legitimate and we will only share the emails associated with the clients' products.
Users have to opt-in to marketing emails via the login and activation flow. Legitimate does not store any user emails.
LGT Experiences is Legitimate's flagship product. We aim to provide a turn-key, vertically integrated solution that combines software, hardware, logistics, and manufacturing to make sure phygital products have the most seamless experience as possible while requiring little effort and coordination from creators and brands.
This plan is inclusive of almost all services provided by Legitimate in addition to the LGT Tag hardware.
There are many NFC based tag solutions on the market, some of which are targeted towards phygital products and blockchain applications. To help you select the right type of product, we put together a feature comparison chart and shown below.
Legitimate Tags are powered by NFC and secured by an industry standard encryption algorithm called AES-CMAC. NFC stands for near field communication, a technology that enables devices to read data from NFC tags, tiny computers with antennae embedded inside stickers, tags, or other materials. Similar technology powers hotel room keys, contactless credit cards, transit passes, and keyless entry car fobs. These tags do not contain batteries.
We chose NFC technology because most modern smartphones released in the last few years already have NFC readers built in. They are located at the top of the Apple iPhone and middle of most Android phones.
Our LGT Tags feature a secure industry standard encryption called AES-CMAC which prevents our tags from being copied or duplicated. The tags contain a secure enclave that stores a 128-bit private key which cannot be read and requires the same private key to reprogram the tag. A counter on the tag stores the number of times the tag has been tapped and read. The AES-CMAC algorithm then computes a checksum based on the number of reads, the tag's unique identifier, and the private key programmed into the tag. Our servers will then validate the checksum and make sure it matches the read count and tag identifier. Checksums submitted to our servers are tracked and cannot be used again.
Legitimate's encoding process programs the LGT Tags to use the AES-CMAC algorithm to compute the URLs in the following format in order to submit to our servers for verification.
uid
- unique identification code of the LGT Tag (14 hex characters)
ctr
- counter for the number of reads of the LGT Tag (6 hex characters)
cmac
- AES-CMAC checksum signature (16 hex characters)
The tags can be tapped and read more than 200,000 times and will retain data for more than 30 years. They can be operated in -30℃ to 70℃ temperature and a protective casing can be added for heat and water resistance as well.
Please see our Tag Types for more details.
Our LGT Tags are individually programmed with a unique private key per tag that the tag then uses to generate a checksum for verification. Because each tag has a unique private key, tags need to be individually programmed.
Legitimate provides pre-programmed tags through our manufacturer and other integration partners. For smaller amounts of tags, they may be shipped from our warehouses in Tokyo or New York City. For larger quantities, the tags will be ordered directly from our manufacturer from China.
For creators and brands that wish to program tags themselves during the manufacturing process or have specific requirements including numbered editions, we can provide private access to our tag programmer apps when subscribed to our service plans.
Legitimate is a modern brand at the intersection of fashion, web3, and technology. The logos and typography are designed to seamlessly blend into the existing branding and designs of our clients, partners, brands, and creators.
The company name and logo are inspired by the Reddit LegitCheck. Our founder, Calvin Chan, often used LegitCheck to authenticate his shoes purchased from resale marketplaces. He once received a fake pair that passed through the verification process for one of the leading resale platform and this became one of the reasons why he founded Legitimate.
Our Tap by Legitimate product started with an internal GitHub repository name of lgt-check
.
Our signature check logo serves as both a target area for phones to tap as well as an indicator of a successful verification. The brackets around the check indicate the target area and the animated version of the logo convey a successful authentication in our apps.
We chose Aeonik as our main font because it is clean, balanced, neutral, and yet more distinct than other popular sans-serif fonts such as Helvetica and Proxima Nova. It is an easy typeface to recognize in a sea of sans-serif logos and print materials. The different font weights are flexible in different layouts and spacing, across devices from budget desktop monitors to high density smartphones and even print materials.
We use Tiempos Fine in Italic as our accent font for a decorative flair. Chosen for its sharp lines and contrast to the neutral Aeonik primary font, Tiempos Fine provides the perfect emphasis for short phrases and the differentiation necessary for numbers, subtitles, and other text that need clear hierarchy.
The content below is exported from our Figma file which we use as our source of truth.
We offer standard sticker and plastic tags for different use cases with options to customize tags according to durability, size requirements, and client designs.
We currently offer 5 different standard types of Legitimate NFC Tags to create your phygital products. All these tag types have the option of being custom designed, custom sized, and have an anti-metal layer added for use on a metal surface. A full breakdown of each chip type can be found below. The lead time for all standard-sized tags below is approx. 4 weeks. Any customizations will increase lead time.
These tags come in standard sizes of 20mm and 30mm diameters and are 2mm in thickness. They are heat resistant up to 130°C, machine washable, and water resistant. They can be sewn into clothing with our Legitimate Fabric Label cover or embedded inside physical goods during the creation process.
Our paper sticker tags come in the standard size of 25mm in diameter. They are slightly thicker than a piece of paper with a heat resistance of up to 70°C. These are very lightweight and can be inserted under existing product labels or applied directly onto any exposed flat surfaces of your physical item. The adhesive is made by 3M.
Our PVC tags come in the standard size of 30mm in diameter and are around 0.84mm thick. They come in both coin and sticker options and are heat resistant up to 70°C for the sticker option and 130°C for the coin option. While the coin option can be machine washed we do not recommend them for items that will be machine washed often as they can deteriorate over time. These are very lightweight and can be inserted under existing product labels or applied directly onto any exposed flat surfaces of your physical item. The optional sticker adhesive backing is made by 3M.
Our PET Tags come in the standard size of 30mm in diameter and are around 0.84mm thick. They come in both coin and sticker options and are heat resistant up to 130°C for the sticker option and 180°C for the coin option.
Our Fabric Tags come in the standard size of 30mm in diameter and are around 0.25mm thick. They are heat resistant up to 180°C, machine washable up to 200 times, and designed to withstand at least 20 wash and dry cycles. These are very lightweight and can be sewn in or inserted under other fabric labels, patches, or leather panels.
** These vary on a case by case. Please contact us for further information
Legitimate provides fabric labels for LGT Tags when used in garments or merchandise for a small fee. Tap areas must display some sort of indicator or "tap here phrase" to help guide customers when not using LGT labels or sticker materials. Custom tag pouches, rubberized overlays, or embroidered patches are available at an extra cost.
Our white-label program is also available to select partners.
Most brand assets are available in light and dark versions with transparent backgrounds and in SVG and 4x PNG formats. Some assets such as those designated for social media include background fill.
The square logo avatars are designed with extra spacing so that platforms like Twitter can crop into a circle.
We advise all our brands and partners to include some printed material to explain how the LGT Tag works for different devices. For many customers, your product may be the first time they interact with NFC technology or a phygital product so they do not know how to use the NFC reader or where its location is on their phone.
The NFC reader may need to be manually switched on for older phones and low power mode must be switched off to read the LGT Tag.
We include a vector and an editable version of this design. Please use the vector file when adding your logo. The editable version is provided in case translation is necessary. You may need a copy of our typeface Aeonik to edit the text.
You can also create your own version of this insert and use any of the content here.
For best print quality, please keep the CMYK color profile and provide your printing partner directly with the Adobe Illustrator .ai
file with all text converted to vectors.
LGT Tags can be ordered from Legitimate with a default cover for the round plastic tags so they can be sewn onto clothing.
It is possible to create a custom tag pouch or print the logo directly onto the garment. The Legitimate check ☑️ logo must align with the LGT Tag so that the check aligns with the center of the NFC chip and the smartphone readable area.
