Digital Product Passport

The Legitimate Digital Product Passport utilizes blockchain to permanently store to back products on-chain.

Legitimate Protocol

The Legitimate Protocol is an blockchain based framework designed to keep physical assets in-sync with their digital counterparts in terms of ownership and provenance. When a product is integrated into the Legitimate Protocol, it becomes a connected product.

Legitimate Tags and the Legitimate platform enable customers to verify authenticity and ownership of physical goods through our services.

Our product data including product information, individual creation dates, and anonymized owner identifiers. These data are stored on blockchains so it can be independently accessed and verified for authenticity and circularity tracking.

How it works

Connected products powered by Legitimate's Protocol have a few key features:

  • Locking Mechanism on the Digital Product NFT

    • The Digital Product NFT is cannot be transferred or used until the current owner reads the tag with their phone to verify.

  • Secure

Programming Process

Our LGT Tags are individually programmed with a unique private key per tag that the tag then uses to generate a checksum for verification. Because each tag has a unique private key, tags need to be individually programmed.

Pre-Programmed Tags

Legitimate provides pre-programmed tags through our manufacturer and other integration partners. For smaller amounts of tags, they may be shipped from our warehouses in Tokyo or New York City. For larger quantities, the tags will be ordered directly from our manufacturer from China.

Tag Programming Tools

For creators and brands that wish to program tags themselves during the manufacturing process or have specific requirements including numbered editions, we can provide private access to our tag programmer apps when subscribed to our service plans.

    • Any temperature above 200C will burn the adhesive

Assets Management in Legitimate Dashboard

To review all the assets your Organization has uploaded to Legitimate Dashboard go to the image or videos section in the navigation menu on the lefthand side.

  • Manage your Organization and its users

  • Manage your Organization's assets (images and videos)

  • Edit and preview
When an owner of a phygital product transfers the Digital Product NFT to another person, the NFT is immediately locked again. The only way to unlock the NFT is by using the Legitimate Tag attached to the product.
  • Extensible

    • Third party exchanges, marketplaces, and applications can build on top of this transfer restricted NFT state to provide token gated content, access, and more.

  • Header Logo Spec

For the best user experience, we suggest using a logo with an aspect ratio of 1:1 or 16:9. We recommend keeping the file size as small as possible to help with page loading times. Please keep the image under 100 KB.

    What is a SKU

In order to connect your Legitimate Tags to a unique digital experience you must purchase the number of SKUs needed for your project. One SKU gives you access to one digital experience for a set number of tags. Each item type or design also needs a SKU to associate the item image, description, and title to that item category. Any additional experiences you want to associate with any number of the tags you ordered will incur an additional charge for the extra SKU setup

    Examples:

    • A client orders 100 tags from Legitimate to be used for both hoodies and t-shirts. 50 tags will be used for hoodies and 50 tags will be used for t-shirts. This client will need to purchase 2 SKUs for this order.

    • A client orders 100 tags from Legitimate to be used for 100 hoodies. The exclusive content for 50 of the hoodies will be different than the digital experience of the other 50 hoodies. This client would need to purchase 2 SKUs.

    Content Embeds

    • supports oEmbed compatible services such as YouTube, Spotify, SoundCloud, etc.

    • a list of supported services is here

    Editing

The desktop preview is constrained to a mobile device width in order to simulate the experience on mobile phone. In order to edit, please switch to the Mobile Edit view to change the content.

    Styling

The Legitimate brand fonts PS Times and ABC Favorit are both included as well as other web-safe fonts and system defaults.

You can also include your font files through custom CSS added to the page.

    Video Tutorial

    Custom Experience API

For clients that need advanced customizations outside of the usual capabilities of Builder.io, a custom experience can be built from scratch in JavaScript and added via our Custom Experience addon.

Take the release paper off the back of the Heat Press Tag
  • Place the tag on the desired location of your item

  • Place a thin piece of fabric underneath the surface you are working on to keep your surface from burning

  • Press the heat press straight down onto the tag for 20 seconds and then take the heat press off

  • Flip the item over so that the side of the tag you just heat pressed is facing down

  • Hold the heat press down on this new side of the item for 20 seconds

  • If the edges of the tag are still not fully adhered use the heat press on the tags for intervals of 10 seconds until the tag is securely attached

  • **if you are only able to heat press one side of the item we recommend using the heat press for 20 seconds with 10 second intervals after until the tag feels firmly secured

    Technical Specs

    Legitimate Tags

Legitimate Tags utilize NFC technology and are secured by an industry standard encryption algorithm called AES-CMAC. NFC stands for near field communication, a technology that enables devices to read data from NFC tags, tiny microchips with antennae embedded inside stickers, tags, or other materials. Similar technology powers hotel room keys, contactless credit cards, transit passes, and access key fobs. These tags do not contain batteries.

We chose NFC technology because most modern smartphones released in the last few years already have NFC readers built in. They are located at the top of the Apple iPhone and middle of most Android phones.

    Encryption

Our Legitimate Tags feature a secure industry standard encryption called which prevents our tags from being copied or duplicated. The tags contain a secure enclave that stores a 128-bit private key which cannot be read and requires the same private key to reprogram the tag. A counter on the tag stores the number of times the tag has been tapped and read. The AES-CMAC algorithm then computes a checksum based on the number of reads, the tag's unique identifier, and the private key programmed into the tag. Our servers will then validate the checksum and make sure it matches the read count and tag identifier. Checksums submitted to our servers are tracked and cannot be used again.

    URL Format

Legitimate's encoding process programs the Legitimate Tags to use the AES-CMAC algorithm to compute the URLs in the following format in order to submit to our servers for verification.

uid - unique identification code of the Legitimate Tag (14 hex characters)

ctr - counter for the number of reads of the Legitimate Tag (6 hex characters)

cmac - AES-CMAC checksum signature (16 hex characters)

    Durability

The tags can be tapped and read more than 200,000 times and will retain data for more than 30 years. They can be operated in -30℃ to 70℃ temperature and a protective casing can be added for additional heat and water resistance as well.

Please see our for more details.

Managing your SKUs on Legitimate Dashboard with a third-party CMS integration

This page will walk you through the process of getting to a SKU page, managing your tag's digital experience, and viewing your SKU's analytic.

With in an individual SKU page you'll be able to edit the following tabs:

    • Overview

    • Product

    • Analytics

    • Webpage

    • Blockchain

Each section below will go into further detail about what you can do in each tab

    SKU Overview Tab

When you first access an individual SKU you'll land on the SKU Overview Page. (to learn how to manage an access an individual SKU please review our docs )

The overview page provides a snapshot of information about that SKU including:

    • the number of tags in the SKU

    • the number of for that SKU

    • the product name - editable field (visible on Legitimate digital experience by end client)

    • the SKU notes - editable field (not visible on Legitimate digital experience by end client; for internal use only)

The SKU name and SKU notes can be changed at anytime on the Overview tab.

Please keep in mind that while the SKU name is end-consumer facing, meaning the end consumer will see this information as the "SKU name" in the digital experience, the SKU notes are internal only. They are meant to provide extra context for your team without adding unnecessary information to the digital experience.

To manage what the end-consumer sees when they tap a Legitimate tag, you'll need to edit both the "Product" tab and the "Webpage" tab within the SKU page. First, make sure you fill in the Product tab. The product tab allows you to edit the name, image and description associated with your tags (shown below). All these assets must be added on dashboard in order to activate your tags. To learn more read about how to activate your tags in dashboard .

You can save your progress at any time in this section and come back to edit it later.

To begin adding in exclusive content to your digital experience go to the "webpage" tab and chose the "Custom" button under "Choose how you would like to create the webpage:"

Once that is selected you can edit your SKU's exclusive content in Builder.io.

On the right hand side you'll be able to see a preview of what the end-user will see when they tap their tags. When you update the Builder.io CMS the preview will change to reflect your changes.

To learn more about the graphs and data breakdown in the Analytics tab please review our in-depth documentation here.

    Image Specs

For the best user experience, we suggest using square photos of at least 1000x1000 pixels in PNG or JPEG formats of no larger than 8MB in file size. Transparency is also supported but please make sure the image works against both dark and light backgrounds.

    Framing

Whether the picture is taken in portrait or landscape orientation, we want to make sure that the subject (i.e. the product) is focused in the center of the frame. If the camera supports square photos, then the photo does not need to be manually cropped afterward.

    Editing

The lay-flat photos should have the perspective adjusted if they're not shot exactly from the center

The lay-flat photos should have the perspective adjusted if they're not shot exactly from the center

The item should have its background removed and placed against a transparent canvas for the best visual experience

    Capturing your video

We recommend capturing your videos in 4K resolution. If you do not have equipment that can record in 4K, 1080p is acceptable as well.

Legitimate uses a rotating table to capture the 360-degree video shown in many of Legitimate's curated products. The item is recorded spinning slowly against a solid background. We use mannequins for clothing and stands for paintings or sculptures to showcase the item in its intended setting.

We recommend square videos for maximum compatibility but most smartphones and professional cameras capture widescreen videos (16:9 aspect ratio) by default. These will need to be cropped so only the center portion of the video will be shown.

    Converting your video

Handbrake is a free open source tool that can be used to convert videos. We use the following settings to convert our video before uploading.

    Summary Settings

Select MP4 in the Format dropdown and check Web Optimized

    User Accounts

Our system tracks ownership and activation state of digital items through the blockchain. All users, whether using email, SMS, or crypto wallets, have a unique public wallet address. This address is not publicly associated with the owner, but can be configured through various third party platforms to assign usernames, avatars, and social media accounts that may reveal a person's identity.

    WalletConnect + Dynamic

When a user connects their own crypto wallet to Legitimate's services, they will most likely use a system called that allows mobile, web, and other wallets to connect to dApps.

We utilize a separate service called to manage third party wallet connections including WalletConnect.

    Dynamic Embedded Wallets (Email/SMS Wallet)

When a user uses email or SMS to login to Legitimate, they use our service provider Dynamic to create an email or SMS based wallet. This email or phone number and wallet is stored with Dynamic.

Legitimate does not have access to the email unless that permission is granted by the user when requested with Dynamic. Legitimate does not store any email address or wallets associated with emails.

    Dedicated Wallets

This is a custom service add-on available for our enterprise clients that require customized login flows and data requirements. The email, phone number, and wallet is stored with Magic.

Legitimate will host email, phone number, and wallet information for specific product features such as ownership history and processes this data on our servers.

    Blockchain Data

Since all of Legitimate's products run on public blockchains such as , , and , all ownership, mint, and transfer history is publicly viewable on , , , and many other blockchain or NFT platforms.

We utilize many third parties to process public blockchain data on behalf of Legitimate including , , and others.

Enterprise clients may request this mailing list from Legitimate and we will only share the emails associated with the clients' products.

Users have to opt-in to marketing emails via the login and activation flow.
