Legitimate connects your physical product to digital experiences that extend your customers’ relationship with your brand.
We provide an all-in-one solution for connected products including NFC tags, customized digital experiences, user accounts and ownership tracking, and analytics data.
We offer standard sticker and plastic tags for different use cases with options to customize tags according to durability, size requirements, and client designs.
We currently offer 6 different standard types of Legitimate NFC Tags. All these tag types have the option of being custom designed, custom sized, and have an anti-metal layer added for use on a metal surface. A full breakdown of each chip type can be found below. The lead time for all tags below is approximately 4 weeks. Any customizations will increase lead time.
These tags come in standard size of 30mm in diameter and are 2mm in thickness. They are heat resistant up to 130°C, machine washable, and water resistant. They can be embedded inside physical goods during the creation process. We recommend using these tags with figurines.
Our heat press tags come in the standard size of 30mm x 30mm in our Legitimate window shape (shown below). They can be applied to a fabric product using a heat press. We recommend using these tags in fabric products.
Our paper sticker tags come in a standard size of 30mm x 30mm in our Legitimate window shape (shown below). They are slightly thicker than a piece of paper and have a heat resistance of up to 70°C. They are very lightweight and can be applied directly onto any exposed flat surfaces of your physical item. The adhesive is made by 3M. We recommend using these tags with artwork or other printed products. The sticker adhesive backing is made by 3M.
Our PET Sticker Tags come in the standard size of 30mm in diameter and are around 0.84mm thick. They are heat resistant up to 130°C, are very lightweight, and can be inserted under existing product labels or applied directly onto any exposed flat surfaces of your physical item. We recommend using them in fabric products with our Legitimate Fabric Labels. The sticker adhesive backing is made by 3M.
Our Fabric Tags come in the standard size of 30mm in diameter and are around 0.25mm thick. They are heat resistant up to 180°C, machine washable up to 200 times, and designed to withstand at least 20 wash and dry cycles. These are lightweight and can be sewn into products directly or inserted under other fabric labels, patches, or leather panels. We recommend using them in fabric products with out Legitimate Fabric Labels.
Our Tamper Proof Paper Sticker Tags come in the standard size of 25mm in diameter, with a 35mm x 7mm long tail. They are slightly thicker than a piece of paper and have a heat resistance of up to 70°C. They are very lightweight and can be applied directly onto any exposed flat surfaces of your physical item. When the tail of these tags is broken the tag will be registered as "unsealed" or "tampered with" which can change the content of the digital experience. The adhesive is made by 3M. We recommend using these tags on bottled items. The sticker adhesive backing is made by 3M.

Along with , Legitimate's service offerings are the easiest way for any brand to start creating phygital products and experiences.
Legitimate Tags utilize NFC technology and are secured by an industry standard encryption algorithm called AES-CMAC. NFC stands for near field communication, a technology that enables devices to read data from NFC tags, tiny microchips with antennae embedded inside stickers, tags, or other materials. Similar technology powers hotel room keys, contactless credit cards, transit passes, and access key fobs. These tags do not contain batteries.
We chose NFC technology because most modern smartphones released in the last few years already have NFC readers built in. They are located at the top of the Apple iPhone and middle of most Android phones.
Legitimate's encoding process programs the Legitimate Tags to use the AES-CMAC algorithm to compute the URLs in the following format in order to submit to our servers for verification.
uid
- unique identification code of the Legitimate Tag (14 hex characters)
ctr
- counter for the number of reads of the Legitimate Tag (6 hex characters)
cmac
- AES-CMAC checksum signature (16 hex characters)
The tags can be tapped and read more than 200,000 times and will retain data for more than 30 years. They can be operated in -30℃ to 70℃ temperature and a protective casing can be added for additional heat and water resistance as well.
Our Legitimate Tags feature a secure industry standard encryption called which prevents our tags from being copied or duplicated. The tags contain a secure enclave that stores a 128-bit private key which cannot be read and requires the same private key to reprogram the tag. A counter on the tag stores the number of times the tag has been tapped and read. The AES-CMAC algorithm then computes a checksum based on the number of reads, the tag's unique identifier, and the private key programmed into the tag. Our servers will then validate the checksum and make sure it matches the read count and tag identifier. Checksums submitted to our servers are tracked and cannot be used again.
Please see our for more details.
Our LGT Tags are individually programmed with a unique private key per tag that the tag then uses to generate a checksum for verification. Because each tag has a unique private key, tags need to be individually programmed.
Legitimate provides pre-programmed tags through our manufacturer and other integration partners. For smaller amounts of tags, they may be shipped from our warehouses in Tokyo or New York City. For larger quantities, the tags will be ordered directly from our manufacturer from China.
For creators and brands that wish to program tags themselves during the manufacturing process or have specific requirements including numbered editions, we can provide private access to our tag programmer apps when subscribed to our service plans.
The Legitimate Digital Product Passport utilizes blockchain to permanently store to back products on-chain.
The Legitimate Protocol is an blockchain based framework designed to keep physical assets in-sync with their digital counterparts in terms of ownership and provenance. When a product is integrated into the Legitimate Protocol, it becomes a connected product.
Our product data including product information, individual creation dates, and anonymized owner identifiers. These data are stored on blockchains so it can be independently accessed and verified for authenticity and circularity tracking.
Connected products powered by Legitimate's Protocol have a few key features:
Locking Mechanism on the Digital Product NFT
The Digital Product NFT is cannot be transferred or used until the current owner reads the tag with their phone to verify.
Secure
When an owner of a phygital product transfers the Digital Product NFT to another person, the NFT is immediately locked again. The only way to unlock the NFT is by using the Legitimate Tag attached to the product.
Extensible
Third party exchanges, marketplaces, and applications can build on top of this transfer restricted NFT state to provide token gated content, access, and more.
and the platform enable customers to verify authenticity and ownership of physical goods through our services.
Turn the heat press on
Ideal temperature is 150C, but anywhere between 140 - 180C will work (this will be heat setting M on the recommended heat press). Please adjust the time spent adhering to the tag with the heat press accordingly.
Any temperature above 200C will burn the adhesive
Take the release paper off the back of the Heat Press Tag
Place the tag on the desired location of your item
Place a thin piece of fabric underneath the surface you are working on to keep your surface from burning
Press the heat press straight down onto the tag for 20 seconds and then take the heat press off
Flip the item over so that the side of the tag you just heat pressed is facing down
Hold the heat press down on this new side of the item for 20 seconds
If the edges of the tag are still not fully adhered use the heat press on the tags for intervals of 10 seconds until the tag is securely attached
**if you are only able to heat press one side of the item we recommend using the heat press for 20 seconds with 10 second intervals after until the tag feels firmly secured
Verify is the user interface that powers a full end-to-end customer journey when interacting with the Legitimate Tag as well as the associated digital content and product passport.

We advise all our brands and partners to include some printed material to explain how the Legitimate Tag works for different devices. For many customers, your product may be the first time they interact with NFC technology or a phygital product so they do not know how to use the NFC reader or where its location is on their phone.
The NFC reader may need to be manually switched on for older phones and low power mode must be switched off to read the Legitimate Tag.
We included an editable version of this design in case translation or change is necessary. You may need a copy of our typeface to edit the text.
You can also create your own version of this insert and use any of the content here.
For best print quality, please keep the CMYK color profile and provide your printing partner directly with the Adobe Illustrator .ai

audio codec for maximum compatibility with Legitimate's user experience.
If your video editing tool or rendering software supports custom resolutions, please use 1080x1080 or 2160x2160 pixels.
Widescreen and vertical videos are supported but may not look the best in Legitimate's user interface
We recommend capturing your videos in 4K resolution. If you do not have equipment that can record in 4K, 1080p is acceptable as well.
Legitimate uses a rotating table to capture the 360-degree video shown in many of Legitimate's curated products. The item is recorded spinning slowly against a solid background. We use mannequins for clothing and stands for paintings or sculptures to showcase the item in its intended setting.
We recommend square videos for maximum compatibility but most smartphones and professional cameras capture widescreen videos (16:9 aspect ratio) by default. These will need to be cropped so only the center portion of the video will be shown.

In order to connect your Legitimate Tags to a unique digital experience you must purchase the number of SKUs needed for your project. One SKU gives you access to one digital experience for a set number of tags. Each item type or design also needs a SKU to associate the item image, description, and title to that item category. Any additional experiences you want to associate with any number of the tags you ordered will incur an additional charge for the extra SKU setup
Examples:
A client orders 100 tags from Legitimate to be used for both hoodies and t-shirts. 50 tags will be used for hoodies and 50 tags will be used for t-shirts. This client will need to purchase 2 SKUs for this order.
A client orders 100 tags from Legitimate to be used for 100 hoodies. The exclusive content for 50 of the hoodies will be different than the digital experience of the other 50 hoodies. This client would need to purchase 2 SKUs.
For the best user experience, we suggest using a logo with an aspect ratio of 1:1 or 16:9. We recommend keeping the file size as small as possible to help with page loading times. Please keep the image under 100 KB.
Most brand assets are available in light and dark versions with transparent backgrounds and in SVG, JPEG, and PNG formats. Some assets such as those designated for social media include background fill.
The square logo avatars are designed with extra spacing so that platforms like Twitter can crop into a circle.
Please refer to our for usage details.
On Legitimate Dashboard you can manage all the SKUs in your organization:
Create new SKU (a SKU is a set of tags that all share the same digital experience or URL redirect)
Edit and preview a SKU's digital experience via our internal CMS system (content management system)
View and export data and analytics for all your Organization's SKUs or a specific SKU
View and export end-customers' email addresses or SNS info for all your Organization's SKUs or a specific SKU
Manage your organization and add users
In order to properly set up your redirect link when using API access with Legitimate you'll need to add the redirect link into Legitimate Dashboard. Please follow the steps below to learn how to add in your redirect link
For the best user experience, we suggest using square photos of at least 1000x1000 pixels in PNG or JPEG formats of no larger than 8MB in file size. Transparency is also supported but please make sure the image works against both dark and light backgrounds.
Whether the picture is taken in portrait or landscape orientation, we want to make sure that the subject (i.e. the product) is focused in the center of the frame. If the camera supports square photos, then the photo does not need to be manually cropped afterward.
The lay-flat photos should have the perspective adjusted if they're not shot exactly from the center
The lay-flat photos should have the perspective adjusted if they're not shot exactly from the center
The item should have its background removed and placed against a transparent canvas for the best visual experience
